Marcus Chen opened Gulf Coast Aquatics in 2019 after years running aquarium departments at big-box stores. He'd watched too many beginners go home with sick fish, the wrong tank size, or stocking lists doomed to fail.
He started Gulf Coast Aquatics on the opposite premise: every fish gets a two-week quarantine, every customer gets the truth, and nobody leaves the store with livestock that won't survive.
Today, the shop runs 120+ display tanks across freshwater, saltwater, and a dedicated coral room. The staff still keep tanks at home. The advice is still free.
Two weeks of quarantine before any fish reaches the floor.
Most fish stores buy from wholesalers and sell within days. We don't. Every fish — freshwater, saltwater, coral — sits in our quarantine room for at least two weeks while we observe for ich, velvet, flukes, bacterial infections, and stress symptoms.
What doesn't make it through quarantine never goes on the sales floor. That's why our customers' tanks don't crash a week after a new fish goes in.
We pair the standard with free water testing and an honest stocking conversation at the counter. If your tank can't handle what you came in for, we'll tell you.

Marcus opened Gulf Coast Aquatics in 2019 after more than 25 years keeping fish and managing aquarium departments at major big-box retailers. He specializes in marine and reef systems but still keeps a planted freshwater 75 at home, and personally vets every species and frag that enters quarantine.
